What a show! This tour was most definitely a tribute to Edward even tho it
was billed “best of all worlds”. Yes, there are cuts which represent Sammy’s
career as a whole, but the majority of the setlist are songs that were played
during his tenure in Van Halen (86-95, 04). I was secretly hoping after Ed’s
passing Sammy would do something like this and he more than came through.
Without question, one of my favorite shows of the year, if not my favorite.
My original ticket was in 600 row Q (which was pretty good for sound), however
we were dealing with temperatures nearing 100 degrees, so the large industrial
fans up above were on full blast. One of them happened to be right above us in
600! I had windscreens but did not have dead rats. It felt like I was sitting
in a wind tunnel – thats how bad I felt it was!! I taped the entire Loverboy
set from my seat in 600 and told myself if I saw a closer seat open during the
Sammy set, I would move to get out from underneath the fan. Well, no seats
opened but there was an ADA row behind section 300 practically empty, so right
after “Runaround”, I moved down the few rows and eliminated (most of) the
wind. Thankfully, its not that present on the recording during the first 3
songs afterall, and when I heard it in between songs throughout, I used the
handy “de-wind” module in RX7 to remove it. Taper’s crisis averted. Please note,
Jason Bonham had a family emergency and had to return to London to be with
his mother, so Kenny Aronoff flew in literally the morning of and rehearsed
all afternoon to nail the set. He did an astounding job reading charts on
the fly and watching the band for cues. Thats why he’s one of the best! He will
be performing the final 2 shows on this tour, as well. Ironically, the last
time I saw Chickenfoot in 2012 was this exact lineup! Finally, having Rai
Thistlethwayte on live keyboards throughout the set made an already great show
even better. Such a difference. The guy oozes talent. I really hope this was
not the last time I see Sammy live (he is 76, afterall), but if it was – what
a way to go out!! He is an absolute rock n’ roll treasure.
