/> Notes: With the fabulous flood of Van Halen 1982 boards flowing to the fans (thanks ByTorX1!!) thought I’d upload my master audience recording from this night. Maybe someone with the Audacity skills could make a nice merge, etc. of the two sources. If nothing else, this will help fill in the missing bits and vice versa.
I was a bit late to Van Halen fandom, not really getting into them until reading in Creem something to the effect of “with no Zeppelin coming out, as least we have new Van Halen.” That was right around the time Fair Warning came out.
I missed the Van Halen Oakland 1981 shows, but by the time the band came back to the Bay Area in 1982 I was a fan.
I also was discovering bootlegging, which fascinated me. I fell into the “I’m a big fan and want to hear everything” camp. The unofficial nature made it even more interesting.
My first effort was Black Sabbath at the Cow Palace 4/17/82. I somehow got in a fairly large Panasonic mono recorder that I had for a few years. With Van Halen due in, I convinced my parents (miss you guys) to buy me a Walkman2, which recorded in stereo. Before the show, I recorded an ad off the radio, which is here.
Now, all I needed was a ticket for the first show. The show was sold out, so I took my 17-year-old self to the Cow Palace via bus. I ambled over to a liquor store where some neighborhood kids were hanging out. I asked if anyone had a ticket for sale and in a minute one was produced. All I had was $20 (about all I had to my name at the time) and my offer was accepted with some skepticism. “Are you sure $20 is all you have?” Me: “Yup.” Them: “It better be” implying a beat down if I was lying. The deal was made and I crossed the street to the Cow Palace.
Now all I had to do was sneak the recorded in. Back then there were no iPhones etc. Getting contraband in was a cat and mouse game. Tickets and ads (look at the ad in comments) often specified: “No Recorders.” There were physical searches. I stuffed the recorder in the back of my waist, was searched, the recorded was not detected and in I went, which provided great elation and relief.
After the Fire was the opener, a fine band who later scored an MTV hit with Der Kommissar. But myself and the thousands of others were there for Van Halen.
I moved myself onto the floor, about 25 feet or so in front of the stage. I kept my finger on the record button and as soon of the lights went down I hit it and the rest can be heard here…<br
