Springsteen closes out NCAA music festival

DALLAS (AP) — Bruce Springsteen has taken the stage on the last day of a three-day music festival in Dallas for the NCAA Final Four Tournament with a basketball in his hand.

The Boss briefly addressed the crowd Sunday at the NCAA March Madness Musical Festival before he and the E Street Band launched into a cover of Van Halen’s hit “Jump.” They then played several of the band’s own hits, including “Hungry Heart.”

Pop-rock trio fun., the group behind the song “We Are Young,” played before Springsteen at the concert in Reunion Park in downtown Dallas.

This year’s Final Four is being held at the massive stadium in nearby Arlington where the Dallas Cowboys play.

I love the Boss and he is by the far the bravest big name act out there when it comes to taking chances and playing other people’s music (song requests are part of most of his shows).

Having said that … this sounded terrible to me and was not nearly as good as he normally sounds when playing covers.

Typically I really like cover tunes. But that was just done aweful. I don’t know how to describe it but it is like they were just playing notes with no feeling. Horrible tone but beyond that just no feeling.

Sounded like Bruce’s band doing Jump…not necessarily bad just not polished or sounding like the original. Jump is not that great of a song to begin with….I never really understood how the weakest song VH ever wrote & recorded became their biggest hit…but whatever…

I was never a Bruce fan back in the day … just didn’t click for me. However, in recent years, I’ve authored several Bruce DVDs and by doing that, I’ve come to appreciate his music a lot more and gained a lot of respect for him. He is truly a fan friendly guy who plays up to four hour shows (the standard is three hours though), is always changing the setlist (to include playing entire albums in their entirety from start to finish), takes song requests (and specifically chooses songs the band hasn’t played live before – just to keep it different), and he tries to keep the ticket prices reasonable.

I’ve never been a Bruce fan either, although I like a few of his hits. For me, he’s always come across as too earnest and too serious. That said, he really won me over during the Super Bowl halftime show a few years back. He was a lot of fun and didn’t seem very serious at all. I guess I’d go see him if he ever came out here.

Well said sir. I am a HUGE Springsteen fan. Over 35 years i’ve been to 140 shows and counting…….with that being said even I got the douche chills over Jump. He might’ve done better with The Pointer Sisters version. But this was done as kind of a lighthearted thing. He just finished up in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. And at many of those stops he opened with songs that were for the cities he was in. in Australia he opened a couple of shows with Highway To Hell. Adelaide being Bon Scot’s hometown. Someone mentioned Tom Morello. He rips on this song. He also opened a show with Stayin’ Alive and in New Zealand he opened with Lordes song Royals. (that too was God awful), and even did Don’t Change by INXS. The real leg of the US Tour opens tonight in Cincinnati. If he opens with the theme to WKRP In Cincinnatti I may have to hang myself….
