Further to Randy’s excellent post the other day regarding albums that have stayed with us over time, I thought I’d start a similar thread about our ten most played bootlegs over the years (audio & video). Here goes mine :-

01. Ozzy Osbourne – Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, UT 3/18/84
(Never officially released on DVD, the Laserdisc transfer looks great – Jake is awesome on this one)
02. Van Halen – “The Nightmare Before Halloween” Pasadena Civic, Pasadena, CA 10/15/77
(Had this on cassette back in the day, wrongly dated 12/20/77 of course! Played it to death!)
03. Bruce Springsteen – The Roxy, The Agora, Passaic, The Fox Theater & Winterland 1978
(All five of the legendary Darkness radio broadcasts are utterly essential)
04. Van Halen – Apollo Theatre, Manchester, UK 6/19/80
(The first bootleg I ever owned – that cassette got played a LOT)
05. Van Halen – “Scorin’ At The Forum” Montreal, Canada 4/19/84
(Probably my most watched audience-shot show)
06. Journey – Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan 7/31/81
(Great setlist, could even be better than the official Houston ’81 DVD. The Snivlle Remastered Edition looks great)
07. Van Halen – “Civic Disobedience” Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, CA 5/29/76
(Ace soundboard from the club days period)
08. Stevie Nicks – US Festival, Glen Helen Park, San Bernardino, CA 5/30/83
(Whacked out of her mind – but still a great show. Again, the Snivlle Remastered Edition is the one you need)
09. Dortmund Festival, Westfalenhalle, Germany 12/83
(So many great performances – Ozzy, Leppard, Maiden, Priest, Scorpions)
10. Dokken – Fox Theater, Detroit, MI 1/30/86
(An Under Lock And Key show on video! Quality isn’t great but perfectly watchable)

*Also must give a shout out to the VH 2012 DVD’s, particularly all the awesome multi-cam’s which have been watched plenty over the last year or so.

Listing the ten that have stayed with the most is not easy. Takes me back to the 80′s when vinyl bootlegs was a big thing :)
My list is listed randomly..

1. Van Halen – Monsters of Rock in Stockholm 1984
(played this one to death and the first bootleg I heard with VH)

2. Deep Purple – “Highway Stars” Melbourne 1984-11-30
(one of the first reunion shows and played my cassette until it worn out)

3. Black Sabbath – “Born In Hell” Worcester, MA 1983-11-04
(fantastic radioshow from the Born Again tour)

4. Rainbow – “Roger’s Birthdayparty” Long Island, NY 1979-11-30
(great radioshow with Graham Bonnet on vocals)

5. Dortmund Festival, Germany 1983
(great festival and the video is the one I’ve seen the most of all I have)

6. Deep Purple – “In Your Trousers” Stockholm 1993-11-13
(one of the best sounding bootlegs from the final tour with Ritchie Blackmore and the band is on fire)

7. Van Halen – Largo 1982
(One of my most watched VHS/DVD concerts)

8. Thin Lizzy – Sydney 1978
(great pro-filmed concert)

9. Deep Purple – “Third Night” Stockholm 1985-06-16
(Another great concert from the reuinon tour I had on vinyl)

10. The Mission – “Into The Blue” Manchester, England 1990-03-15
(great band and a great concert)

Well, the sound may be a bit bad but the concert and filming is great. The list is for the boots that have been with me for a long time not necessarily the best sounding ones..

I didn’t discover the joy of bootlegs until just a few years ago, but since then I have discovered a few I don’t know how I lived without. I started out by looking for shows I attended and it grew from there. Here’s a few of my faves in alphabetical order.

ACDC – Nashville, TN 1978-08-08 Soundboard recording. “Blues, Booze & Tattoos” (there are lots of good sounding shows from this era)
Drivin’ & Cryin’ – Cleveland, OH 1991-07-04 Audio (excellent sound from under-rated band)
English Beat – Amsterdam 1980-05-10 FM Broadcast (The Beat at their best)
Jane’s Addiction – Honolulu, HI 1991-09-06 Video (Awesome “final” show filmed on stage by friend of the band)
Material Issue – Chicago, IL 1994-03-22 FM Broadcast
The Police – Rio, Brazil 2007-12-08 Pro Shot DVD (TV Broadcast)
U2 – Honolulu, HI 2006-12-09 Multi-cam Audience DVD (Super great audio and video & I was there)
U2 – Dortmund, Germany 1984-11-21 Pro Shot DVD (Great early U2)
Van Halen – US Festival (A classic)
Van Halen – San Diego, CA 2007-11-25 Silver Stallion DVD (I went to the Vegas show a month later, but I love this front row DVD)
