Wanted to get an opinion from anybody who cares to discuss which soundboard version from VH’s 1980 tour would be best to use for the compilation I’m working on. It seems “Tora! Tora! Tora!” is heavier on bass and perhaps more natural/warmer sounding but “Bright Lights, Big Largo” sounds clearer to me on songs like “Loss of Control” that have complicated dynamics, albeit more tape hiss and channel fluctuations. Any thoughts?

I’ve obtained another factory pressed copy of Tora! x3 last month via eBay for a very low price.
This one is #114. The silver Tora! x3 pressed disc I picked up in early 2015 via ebay has no number on the back insert.
I wonder if it is a fake? It’s interesting. I’d been searching for a silver pressed Tora! Tora! Tora! disc for nearly 15 years and and was able to pick up two of them within a span of 14 months…

The elusive Van Halen live in Largo, Maryland May 1, 1980 Aces High Tora! Tora! Tora! silver CD is now mine!
Legend has it that this rare soundboard recording was sourced from a Pro-shot VIDEO recording of the
May 1, 1980 Van Halen performance at the Capital Theater. You can hear Dave acknowledge a video crew during Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.
It’s well known that many classic rock concerts were professionally filmed at the Capital Center in the late 70s/early 80s.
Complete video recordings of rock heavyweights such as Van Halen, Journey, and AC/DC, live at the Capital Center have surfaced over the years.

However, several Van Halen Capital Center pro shot performances known to exist (World Invasion 1980-1984 tours), have yet to surface.
Will fans ever see these video recordings? Who knows?
It’s up to the Van Halen brothers to open the vault and supply fans with what they have been begging for!
At this stage of the game, I’d like to state that I believe there is a better chance video will surface of Jesus H. Christ appearing at the Last Supper BEFORE Van Halen officially releases any professionally filmed concerts of the original line up!
It appears the brothers just don’t care about the people that propelled them to the top…

There should definately be a number, but if the disc is a pressed CD with the proper code(s) around the hub, then you’ve got an oddity.

Ron, the Tora! x3 disc in question has the same code on the hub as #114. AHCD 021.
Would the unnumbered Tora! x3 disc be any less valuable than #114?
I picked it up for $21 shipped on eBay last year, so I am not complaining!

If you could document that the un-numbered version is more or less rare than the other one, then you may have something there.

However, it’s my opinion that the market for pressed discs is pretty small. Most collectors only collect the music these days it seems, and aren’t interested in a physical disc. But there are a few “old school” collectors left, so you never know. No idea how you’d document how rare or not rare this is though.
