I don’t recall ever seeing and of these shows before. One of their opening shows for Bon Jovi in the UK back in ’95.

Yeah I’ve got that gig on vhs. I went to Wembley Stadium, London and travelled 500m each way. They only played for less than an hour. I was really pissed! They were good tho. Got a Mike pick ! :-P

I saw them at Sheffield on that tour, they were OK… played for about 70 mins inc an encore with Jon and Ritchie covering Rock n Roll if I remember correctly. BBC Radio 1 broadcast about 30 mins of the Wembley gig and I think MTV News may have shown a clip from there too. Cardiff is the only full length vid from those UK dates as far as I know. There is an audience shot of either Rock im Park or Rock am Ring Germany (can’t remember now been out the loop too long!) and there are some Rock am Ring clips that were shown on Headbangers Ball.

I always thought his sound was over processed in those days. I like his sound much better today than during the Hagar era.

+1 on that.. it’s a cool sound and all, but it’s so saturated with effects it could be anyone.

Resident dickhead. I will hurt your delicate feelings.

In my mind, the whole band’s sound changed when Hagar joined. On 5150 Al was using those Simmons drums, Mike was no where in the mix and Ed started to get that “glassy” tone. I always thought his best sound on that album were just the solos on the keyboard tunes like, “Dreams” and “Love Walks In.” OU812 was more of the same as far as Ed’s tone. Carnal Knowledge really started getting too sonic for me. I liked the overall mix on Balance, but Ed’s sound was a little too processed for my taste. There are times I listen to that CD and I like the plush, thick mix, but the guitar itself is too digitized. Thinking back to the two BOV1 tracks with Roth, his sound was just ridiculously washed out and his penchant for relying on that damn sustainer was maddening at times. After the ’04 tour I realized it probably his new “great escape.” “When you’re lost, go to the sustainer, find your note and just ride it out to the chorus.” ADKOT was a welcome return to the “punch you in the chest” tone. Crunchy, ballsy, and in your face. I love the 5150 III and Wolfgang guitars. Things got to “poppy” during the Hagar era and their sound reflected that, in my opinion. When I hear them playing “Panama,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” or “Unchained” during that era, it sounds like a cover band playing those songs. When I first heard Ed playing ATBL on that damn Steinberger, I wanted to slap him and I was only 16 years old. He always talked about how he preferred to go straight from the guitar to the amp and then by ’91 he had a ton of stage gear processing his sound. I’m glad he came back to his original tone. :)
