id='q-20679'>
Fellow VHTraders,

So I have this idea; the only thing stopping me is time and material. The time, well that’s for me to figure out. The material, that’s where you guys come in:

Ever listen to a Van Halen song and say to yourself, “Hey wait a minute, they’ve done that before!” I’m looking for examples of that. For example, when I hear “Stay Frosty,” I hear elements of “Ice Cream Man” and “So This Is Love?”

I have this crazy idea to piece together a megamix with pieces of Van Halen songs spliced together where a similar riff, solo, etc. was used. You expect one thing but get another. Yeah it won’t be prefect but so what? I thought it would be fun to read what people have to say, at the least.

So help me out! Anyone have any Van Halen examples?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Right off the top of my head, I think you could have some fun with the “breakdown” parts of the songs. I’m specifically thinking of ’07 San Diego when Dave went into the ATBL breakdown in the middle of Panama. So start with Panama, breakdown into ATBL then breakdown back to Panama? Something like that anyway… They have lots of breakdowns, especially on the new CD so it could be fun to mix them up.

Here’s a few that come to mind :

- In “The Dream Is Over”, the riff that starts at 0:16 is based on another riff at the beginning of “Dirty Movies” (0:48), played on slide guitar.
- The volume swells at the end of “Tattoo” and the intro of “You’re No Good”, both being taken from “Down In Flames” demo.
- The riff of “Top Of The World” is played palm muted at the very end of Jump, at a different pitch.
- The very beginning of the Amsterdam solo comes from WACF demo “Act Like It Hurts” (1:58), the break part of “House Of Pain” is from that same song too.

If you want to do it with old demos or live jams too, there’s a lot of examples.<br
