wjamflan: Ed stated ’71/’72 in the guitar magazine articles where the quote comes from.

The idea is that he worked on the technique for a while before using it live. The earliest known evidence we have of him tapping is 6/10/77; but that doesn’t mean it was the first time he did it live. It’s the only recorded evidence we have. Either way, the Jimmy Page part of the story is also in question.

IMHO, I believe Ed got the idea for the right hand capo behind the left hand trill he used in Unchained and Can’t Get Away From You from Jimmy. Whether that was in 1971-72 is debatable.

The 6/10 date works because it was a Friday night (see Young and Wild) and they played songs that were not on the WB demo – discounting the Jan and Feb dates. That being said, 5/27 also works, but it’s not that much earlier. Even though it’s not complete, see: Club Days (1974-1977)

You’re Warner bros demos statements are logical, but there’s no way for sure that we would know when atomic punk was first played. There are many demo songs played on the 6/10 show, which also suggests that the show might even be 10/6, unlikely because it was a Thursday, but past midnight is indeed Friday.
If you watch the Smithsonian interviews last Feb. Eddie describes his jimmy page experience again in full detail. I don’t think he’d make the story up if he keeps sticking to it for over 20 years.
As far as dates go, Eddie has a history of being vague, for many known reasons.
Also, if 6/10 is the correct date, than the magic mt. Show must be before it anyway which is what started this post.

Anyway you slice it, the tapping started very near that zep tour, which backs up eddies story.
