Ed stated ’71/’72 in the guitar magazine articles where the quote comes from. The idea is that he worked on the technique for a while before using it live. The earliest known evidence we have of him tapping is 6/10/77; but that doesn’t mean it was the first time he did it live. It’s the only recorded evidence we have. Either way, the Jimmy Page part of the story is also in question. IMHO, I believe Ed got the idea for the right hand capo behind the left hand trill he used in Unchained and Can’t Get Away From You from Jimmy. Whether that was in 1971-72 is debatable. The 6/10 date works because it was a Friday night (see Young and Wild) and they played songs that were not on the WB demo – discounting the Jan and Feb dates.
