Here are the instructions for changing your avatar:

You have to set up an account here: http://www.gravatar.com/

And then upload your avatar. It needs to be square and of a certain minimum size (specs are somewhere on that site). Then it somehow magically appears here. (you need to make sure you use the same email address over there, as you use here). Be sure to wait 5 or 10 mins after uploading it for it to appear here.
