Not sure if this has been mentioned here before, but there is a new “Ask Eddie” page on evhgear.com. Apparently, Ed wants to hear from everyone and they’ll post his answers every month. This is a great idea from Ed.. I wonder how many times Oakland ’81 will be mentioned…

Just asked about releasing any live footage with Dave. Particularly, anything from earlier in his career.

The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!!

Wonder if he’ll only answer questions about EVH gear.

He’s only going to answer the questions he wants to (most likely gear-only questions) – which will not be any of the questions most fans want answered.

By the way, I’m not bad-mouthing the guy. Dave does the same thing.

IIRC he was supposed to go back and re-score “Catherine” which was going to be re-released. Guessing that never happened.

Fans have been submitting their questions for legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and he recently responded to a few of the best in the first installment of Ask Eddie.

In this edition, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer talks about the way he sets up his pedals, the specs of the EVH Wolfgang Special HT and his infamous “Shark” guitar.

Check out what Van Halen had to say…

Lloyd Doubleday of Florida:

Hi Eddie. Thanks for the opportunity to send you questions. Very cool idea! I have my EVH pedals set up with the flanger first followed by the phaser and then the wah pedal. Is that the preferred way to set it up? What’s Kody’s (Eddie’s dog) favorite VH song? The new striped guitars look awesome! Thanks for your time. Have a good one!

Van Halen: Hi Lloyd, I plug into the wah-wah first, then the phase 90 and then the flanger, BUT, there are no rules. It’s really about what is most comfortable for you. Kody’s favorite VH song is “Sunday Afternoon In The Park” because that’s how he spends his Sundays.

Brian Tate from the United Kingdom:

Hi Eddie, could you tell me why you reverse the pickup selector switch on my EVH Wolfgang Special HT, and also why the locking nut and fine tuners? P.S. love the guitar and tone – AWESOME.

Yours Faithfully,

Brian Tate

Van Halen: Hi Brian!!

The reason for reversing the pickup selector switching is because when I play with my right hand on the fingerboard, I tend to bump the switch (it gets in my way). The locking nut makes it much easier to keep the guitar in tune and the fine tuners allow me to fine tune the guitar while I’m playing. I’m glad you like the guitar Brian.

Jeff Hensley of Tennessee:

Hey Eddie, I’ve read that you feel that by taking a saw to your famous “SHARK GUITAR” you destroyed the sound. Even though the guitar looks awesome, do you still wish you hadn’t taken a saw to it? THANKS EDDIE

Van Halen: Hi Jeff, Taking a hacksaw to that guitar radically changed the sound. All the bottom end disappeared because it was a pretty large chunk of wood that I removed, but if I had the chance to go back in time, I believe I would have done the same thing because it does look pretty cool.

Ask Eddie: Writing Music For Movies and T.V.
Posted on July 15th, 2013 by MDuffy

Fans have been submitting their questions for legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and he picked an interesting one for the next installment of Ask Eddie.

This one comes from Jason Goodsell of Canada, who wants to know about Van Halen’s experiences writing music for television or movies.

Jason: Hi Eddie, from time to time you have written music for movies and television. I was wondering if you really like doing theme music, or is it restrictive to stick to the topic of the TV show or movie?

Van Halen: Hi Jason. Writing music for movies or television can be fun. You actually have a lot of freedom to do whatever you want. The main objective (obviously) is to write something that fits the vibe or mood of the scene or movie. When I did The Wild Life, Cameron Crowe, who wrote the movie, was very helpful in picking or giving guidance as to what he wanted. For the movie Twister, Jan de Bont was the director, and he was also very helpful in explaining what he was looking for musically.

Sometimes, unfortunately, when you give them the music, you are no longer in control of how it is manipulated pertaining the sound levels etc., so it doesn’t always end up the way you heard it in your head.

Ask Eddie: Do You Still Have Your Plexiglass Amp?
Eddie Van Halen answers another fan question in the latest “Ask Eddie” – from EVHGEAR
It’s time for another installment of Ask Eddie, where guitarist Eddie Van Halen answers questions submitted by fans around the world.
In the latest edition, Van Halen gives Andrew Armstrong of Australia an update on one of his original amps.
Andrew: Hi there Eddie. I’ve been watching Van Halen since the beginning and seen a couple of shows of my favorite band! My question is do you still own your original 100-watt plexiglass amp, the one used on the first album?
Van Halen: Hi Andrew. Yes, of course I still have my original 100 watt plexiglass amp. Unfortunately over the years, I had too many different amp repair techs mess with it. One of them took it upon himself to re-wire the whole amp with new wire, and the amp never sounded the same again.
Since then, I have taken original old wiring out of other old plexi heads to get the amp back to its original state. But even though it has all old wiring in it again, it still doesn’t sound quite as good as it used to.

Submit your questions for Eddie Van Halen here.
