I’m perplexed by the 5150 Expanded Edition….

The producer of the 40th anniversary release has failed the fans.
It would have been very easy to include the ENTIRE 120 minute New Haven show on CDs 2 & 3, if the pointless remixes/edits were added to the first disc in the set.
The Live Without A Net Blu-Ray is at least FIFTEEN (!!!) years overdue! 4K UHD discs are the standard in 2026…
A 100GB LWAN disc with multiple uncompressed audio tracks would have been far superior, even if the image was locked at 1080p/30fps.

This was a missed opportunity…
I doubt there will be another 5150 reissue before physical formats disappear.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m planning to buy the 5150 40th Anniversary set around Black Friday at a steep discount.
However, this set is not worth more than $50 to me.

If any of the regulars need what I’ve found on Usenet, just send me a PM…

Peace!

I’ve just discovered that when Sammy says “That Sounds Louder Than SHIT Up Here” on BOBW, SHIT is bleeped!! WTF?!?! I am sure that Van Halen’s fanbase could have done without censorship on an official album! Perplexed once again…

LWAN was shot on film. they could have done an 8K transfer if they wanted to. Instead they upscale the 480 version to 1080

Doubt they could do an 8k transfer of 16mm. Anyone know if the 16mm masters survived?

I don’t recall the specifics (if any) from this convo:

They could at least scan 16mm to 4K. Although the director in that interview seems to not recall many specifics about LWAN, he seems to imply it was shot on 35mm as well as implying it was edited on video after transferring all the film that was shot. He doesn’t specify exactly how it was done so we still have no idea if the original film footage still exists or if a final edit film master even exists. I find it hard to believe (well dont want to believe) they would trash all the orginal footage…but crazier shit happens. They kept saying they shot both nights, but I remember reports from the time stating that the film from the first night was unusable for some technical problem, with the film stock I’d assume but I never heard specifics..
IDK why there is so much mystery around LWAN but they really SHOULD be able to give us a 4KUHD release rather than an SD upscale to HD, I am not gonna hold my breath.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but the New Haven audio on CD3 has been remixed with added crowd noise loop. Sounds awful. The bonus live tracks on CD2 (also from New Haven) sound like the original LWAN mix. I don’t know if the Blu-ray uses the new mix or old.

If the Blu-Ray includes a clean 2.0 PCM version of the original mix, we need to create a proper fan-made FLAC set which includes Good Enough and Wild Thing.
Why was Get Up left off the CD, when the disc’s playtime was only 73 minutes?!?

Mine arrived yesterday, all 3 versions. I haven’t listened to them yet.

I’m pretty upset, though, that the 2 LP set isn’t the green vinyl version that I ordered. I received the black vinyl version.

Searching for a customer support number to see if this can be corrected has been a pain in the ass, too.

Vince,
Did you get any satisfaction out of Rhino about the green vs black LP issue?

Ron,
Nope. I just ended up ordering the green vinyl version off Discogs. I was able to buy it for a very good price.
