Right on, MFSL or DCC would be awesome.

For now, here are samples. The 24/192 versions of the first 6 albums are more dynamic; but the 2 Best Of tracks + Tokyo Dome (none of which are 192) all seem to be the same compressed versions available on CD:

Too bad they only sell it as a complete set and not individually by album. $145 for vaporware files is too steep for me.

$145?!?! For that price the Van Halen Album collection should include a ticket to one of the 2015 shows! Highway robbery!

Thank you Ron. However, we ALL KNOW the 2015 HDTracks will be available for 100% off before too long.

And this HDTracks mastering is different from the 2013 mastering. I bought the 24/96 version of the 2013 and I like them. Weren’t those made from the masters used for the vinyl that came out that same year?

My question is what is the best way to listen to these files? You obvioulsy don’t want to convert them in any way, so how do I get the highest quality files to play and sound the best to make the most out of spending the money to buy those files? Certainly not out of the headphone jack on a laptop or by burning a CD. What is the best process?

voodoo: My question is what is the best way to listen to these files?

Since your best audio system is probably your home theater system, which will include a DVD or BluRay player, I’d put the audio files onto a disc that can be listened there.

If you have the ability to play DVD-Audio discs, you could go that route, but these days, I’d probably just go with a BluRay disc. Both have the ability to play back the audio files in their native resolution.

I picked up the new remaster of the first album and today and I loaded I’m The One from my three copies of the CD in a wave editing program. In the wave form view, the 2000 and 2015 files are very similar with the 2015 having slightly less of the brick wall effect happening. The 80s version was quite a bit lower so I did a hard limit with a boost of 5.7 db and it resulted in a wave form fairly close to the 2015 file. The only sonic difference I noticed was that the 80s version had a bit more high end that was especially noticeable in the guitar intro. I wonder if they used the original master tape used for the vinyl to make the early CD version. The spectral view showed the 2015 going up to a full 22k where the 2000 went to about 21k and the 80s version going to about 20.5k. Based on this experiment, I don’t think I’ll buy the rest of this years remasters.

Forget the CDs, you need the 24/192 hi res files from HDTracks. Improved clarity and no hard limiting like the CDs

I just can’t seem to bring myself to buy these remasters…. I mean how many more times can these guys repackage and release the same thing over and over again. How much freakin better can the cds sound? Just seems like another cash grab to me as far as the roth catalogue goes. ha ha

I’ll buck up and fork out the cash for any of the live stuff or new stuff that comes out but I can’t see getting these for the 34th time :) :) Lol

I agree Rob..Unless the levels are adjusted like more bass on OU812 I would’nt bother buying them..
And considering the Tokyo live cd here is $30 and in the US its $16 we get ripped off on cd prices in Australia.

I was considering purchasing the Tokyo Deluxe box set, simply because there is so little official Van Halen product available to purchase.
However, after reading the group’s feedback, I’ll save my money and simply buy the Tokyo CDs for $11 on eBay.

The new remasters would have to sound dramatically different for me to want to buy these albums again.

The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!!
