Voting open to fans for the first time

The nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013 are in. This year’s hopefuls are Albert King, Chic, Deep Purple, Donna Summer, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, N.W.A., Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Randy Newman and Rush. The top vote-getters will be inducted on April 18th, 2013 at the Nokia Theater L.A. live in Los Angeles.

For the first time, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 5th, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they’d like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class of 2013. The results will be announced in mid-December.

“The definition of ‘rock & roll’ means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music,” commented Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is ‘rock & roll.’”

Rush have been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, but this is their first time appearing on the ballot. Pioneering rap groups N.W.A and Public Enemy also both made the ballot in their first year of eligibility. If they are inducted, they will join fellow hip-hop acts Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys in the Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will be held in Los Angeles for the first time since 1993. It’s usually held in New York at the Waldforf Astoria, but it was held in Cleveland in 1997, 2009 and 2012.

The hall of shame will mess this up as always. I’m sure a great rock and roll band like the Marvelettes will get in and Deep Purple and Rush won’t. Oh and don’t forget Donna Summer the queen of disco music that help try and kill rock and roll. The whole thing is a farce. If Purple is voted in they should decline and tell em to stick it.

I think Deep Purple will get in. It’s sad that they wait until a performer or band member dies

(Jon Lord) & then they are nominated.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

The public getting a vote is a joke. We get the top five for 1 vote out of 600? That’s nothing. Jann Wenner overrides the count anyway to do what he wants. See below.

JasonA: Bingo.

Bingo +1. They waited a year for the Dave Clark 5 so Grandmaster Flash could get in and the lead singer died days before getting inducted.

Stay Frosty

Went to rock and roll hall of fame about 2 years after it open in cleveland.Pretty amazing stuff , zeppelins 75 stage set, u2 zoo tv set up,otis redding wing from plane crash, jim morrison’s boy scout uniform and poetry from when he was like 10 ! .The most bizzare thing I’ve ever seen was John Lennon’s blood soaked glasses and his shirt in in brown bag from NYPD .Talked to a guy who was setting up a new display and he said the real hall of fame is in the basement when they rotate all the memorbilla. Now that would be the real hall of fame. I do like the HBO specials that they put out when nominees get in- last years chilli peppers was great , humble guys in awe of where they stood in music history. Rush and Deep Purple should be shoo ins, It’s more of populatity contest like your HS prom King and Queen. Plus you have a complete douche bag like Rolling Stone writer David Fricke who votes and has input on who’s up for nomination. Glad VH is in just too bad it was at bad time in their career for performance.
