After watching this episode, I can honestly say “I get it”. I understand the mindset and actions of Diamond Dave. Many people will disagree, but I will say it, Genius. Plain and simple.

Now for the side bar, what was recorded and saved by the band? Current and very old video clips shown in this featurette that would be nice to have. One shot from modern concert even looked like it was from an audicence shot.

Ok…so the last 3 or so episodes he’s thrown in super quick little nugget from 1978 footage. This one at 18:58 you see EVH and DLR undressing out of jumpsuits. Was this when they did the parachute trick to take the stage?

so yes… Dave has some nice 78 footage. when’s he gonna slip in some 81 footage — or others too.

09/23/78: Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, CA. The bill for this show included Richie Lecea, Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath and Boston. Attendance: 56,000. Van Halen stold the show by hiring look-a-likes to parachute from an airplane into the stadium (David Lee Roth’s idea). An announcer frantically declared, “From out of the sky, Van Halen is coming into the stadium!” Looking as though they would land right on the stage, the four parachutists maneuvered to an area just outside the stadium gates at the last minute. Moments later, Van Halen, dressed in parachute gear, took the stage arm-in-arm to a thunderous ovation (though Alex Van Halen twisted his ankle while waiting for the parachuters to land). The event set a new one-day gross record with receipts totaling $710,000. Van Halen followed with a 10-song set made up of nine songs from Van Halen and Bottoms Up! Audio recording exists.

That was a pretty good one. I like his ramblings, but I can see how he would be pretty hard to work with, too. That “jumpsuit” footage looks pretty good, but it appears to be shot from the stage, so I wonder if it’s a whole show. I’d think, too, that when they staged the parachute landing they would have had someone videotape it for posterity…? Hard to believe they’d do that and not document it.

I like Roth’s acoustic playing in the background of episode #8 while he explains Get Frosty. I’d love to hear that without Roth talking over it.

Stay Frosty

Ha ha, that struck me as funny. You could apply that sentence to anything he’s involved with!
