Van Halen Can Return To Platinum Glory With Stryper Singer’s Help?
10/13/2015

(Classic Rock) Stryper frontman Michael Sweet says he’d love to hit the studio with Van Halen to help them emulate past successes. Sweet feels 2012′s A Different Kind Of Truth – their first with David Lee Roth on vocals since 1984 – was a let down. He thinks they have it in them to produce material of a similar quality to their first two albums – and he wants to be the one to help.

Sweet tells The Metal Voice: “I’m a huge Van Halen fan – about as big as they come. You know when you feel a band is just going through the motions and just not giving it their best? That’s what I felt with that album.

“It got some really good reviews and I’m sitting reading them thinking, ‘I’m hearing something completely different.’ I just didn’t get it.” He continues: “I’d love to get a hold of those guys and take them in the studio and take them back to the old school days and help them make an album that’s comparable with Van Halen I and Van Halen II. They’d probably have a platinum-selling album if they did that.” Read more and watch the full interview here.

Something my dad used to say when someone made an unreasonable or unrealistic request for something: “Wish is one hand and shit in the other and see which one gets filled faster.”

I can’t say I’ve ever listened to anything by Stryper and thought, “Wow! They’re really giving it everything they’ve got!”, so I don’t put much stock in this ass clown’s opinion. I always thought they were one of the cheesiest bands in existence and if it wasn’t for the fact that they pretty much had a lock on their specific audience/market, they wouldn’t have been around as long as they were. Are they even doing anything today?

He’s got as much chance of joining Van Halen as I do of replacing Ian Gillan in Deep Purple !!

What he said… Who gives a shit what this guy thinks? He should start by listening to his own terrible records and fixing that.

Hate all you want … this guy has an excellent voice. You may not like his past music, you may think he would be horrible in Van Halen but if you are unbiased, I don’t know how you could say Sweet doesn’t have an excellent voice. Personally I agree with some of his comments but I don’t think he would be the best person in the band. If Dave, Ed and the boys didn’t just go through the motions and put some fire under their butts. Dave would be the best. If not Dave maybe someone else but Sweet probably ain’t it.

Side note, he did some shows with Boston but I don’t think I listened to any of those recordings. Maybe I should check those out.

It’s not a matter of bias… I don’t care for his style or his voice. There are plenty of good singers in the world. I want personalty.

Has anyone heard the Stryper version of On Fire? It’s nothing special in any shape or form. Gotta go with VAiN. This guy’s vocal character seems forced to me. I have no idea if he produced this. Whether he did or not, it’s pretty underwhelming IMHO.

I have to agree that is a bit underwhelming and a pretty bad producing job in my opinion. Stryper did a whole album of cover songs (not the greatest effort – again in my opinion the overall production and mixing was lacking). I forgot they did a Van Halen song. Although Michael Sweet has an excellent voice it probably isn’t the best for Van Halen and as VAiN said, if you are looking for a front man with personality … again Sweet may not be it. I was only defending him on his vocal range and ability. If I think about it, Dave never had the best voice in the world but he had the attitude and was perfect for Van Halen in the day.

Ralph would be perfect… but holy shit would the band take a beating on getting a Dave ‘clone’ up there… I would LOVE to hear Ralph blast through a few classics with the VH band!
