Welcome to the boards Single-8 !!

BTW thanks for making this one of the best threads we ever had :-)

Awesome to hear those stories dude!! Shows the appreciation to give filmers past and present of the situations encountered while attempting this… Some can now understand that it is not just setting up and filming but all the planning ahead and during..
I dont know if it was already asked but Im sure you ran into some close calls with security? If so was any of your equipment conficated? Were you ever detained? Was your material recorded ever taken from you??
Thx

the JVC machine wasnt suited for that kind of enviroment, the sound was mono and hifi audio didnt exist then… sound needed to be from an alternate source…and the batteries gave less than an hour it turned out to be more hassle than it was worth (for Concert situations) the single-8 films looked much better and stood the test of time,VHS doesnt

one show that had a unusual event was Foreigner and Cheap Trick at Selland in 1978..
these 3 guys behind us lobbed some firecrackers and they blew up right next to the mics on the rail and above the people’s head’s in front of us (there is a loud pop on the audio)
they must have went to complain because security were shining flashlights at us ,right on the mics…then they came up both sides of the row, several of them,I thought the jig was up,but they busted the guys behind us and hauled them away..during cheap trick’s set..walked right by the camera on the tripod!!! It was always on the end of the row….Nazareth 1978 was very stressful..I mention that somewhere here

hahahah… yeah in my head I envisioned most of this stuff on tripod which sounds insane to make happen in those days. But S8S confirmed. That is a crazy to be sitting there w tripod and camera. A very complicated operation to get this stuff back then. Now just whip out your HD phone.

Do you remember how much this concert was?
How was VH back in 79 great energy ? Would have been cool to see them as a young band starting out…

EDDIE’S fingers aren’t fingers they are muscle-powered pistons that hammer guitar strings to the fretboard with the force of a rivet gun”.

that part of the ticket stub is gone but no concert was more than 8.50 at that time..even the Oklahoma jam with 10 bands was only 10.00

Dunno about this one, but the shows went for between $7.50 and $8.50 for that part of the tour.

This is my ticket from a little over a month after the Selland Arena show. I think I used to tell the ticket taker that I like to keep my tickets, so please don’t rip it. That only worked about a third of the time. This must have been one of those times.

when we went to the Bakersfield Civc Auditorium, they always ripped the ticket in half or more…it was to prevent re-use or re-sale…(or so they said)

I just have this funny image of someone trying to tape a show in the late 70′s or early 80s’ (I know it did not happen this way, but this is what I imagine).
So you have someone holding this huge mic attached to a cord that runs into a reel to reel recorded being held by some 250lb guy strong enough to hold it for the show.
Someone else has a shoulder mounted film camera taping everything happening while it is attached to 20 ‘d’ cell batteries taped together to power the whole system.
All of this without security noticing.

Just a short 30 years later it can be done with something the size of a credit card.

Will we ever see another Van Halen type band again in our lifetime?

The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!!

.I saw Little Richard at 68 yrs old..Chuck Berry at 77..B.B. King at 80 and they all still were great I saw Richard again in 2009 and he came on the stage on crutches and left in a wheelchair…I was really looking forward to seeing Buddy Miles back in 2007 until he came in sitting in a wheelchair…its just hard to see guys like vanhalen just standing around and not moving much
and I havent seen them since 2007.. over 7 years ago…so if you have a chance to see someone take it..It may be the last time…Jim Morrison said it best.”the future’s uncertain and the end is always near”….
