vhrob: wow!!! that is soooo much better than my crappy version.

That angle shot from the floor is the only one that was ever released. Here is the sourcing for these three angles:

floor angle: (Ryan) unknown model JVC VHS-C shot in ET mode (extended play mode) master tape; copied immediately after the show to VHS tape in SP mode; copied from that VHS tape in 2014 to digital 8mm tape

left angle: (CBG) Sony CCD-V5 8mm analog camcorder (w/ 2X lens) master tape; copied using a digital 8mm cam connected to another digital 8 cam in 2014

right angle: (Grey) unknown model Toshiba 8mm analog camcorder (w/ 1.5X lens) master tape; copied using a digital 8mm cam connected to another digital 8 cam in 2014

Crazy story about how this project all fell into place –

CBG (guy who shot the left angle) lost contact with the guy who shot the right angle (named Grey) a few years after the concert when Grey moved out west. And Grey never made copies of his tapes. Last year, purely by chance, a friend of CBG’s saw Grey’s master tape on eBay. CBG checked it out, and he knew it was the true master because the picture of the tape on eBay showed Grey’s hand-written notes on the sleeve inside the tape case. CBG remembered that Grey always wrote meticulous notes on the tape sleeves; and he recognized the hand-writing and the notes included CBG’s name as being another person who filmed this show. The guy who shot the floor angle used CBG’s other videocam, so CBG was able to make a copy of that tape right after the concert.

So there you go – a full-blown three cam stealth job shot in 1988 in front of a stadium crowd of 70K+. May wonders never cease!

I don’t have much to work with for this multi-cam of the Giants Stadium show.

Here are my two options (lesser of two evils):

left: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2sgc28zjpksr8rk/Van%20Halen%201988-06-26%20Giants%20Stadium%20left.wav
right: https://www.dropbox.com/s/21cs4oarsdny6j2/Van%20Halen%201988-06-26%20Giants%20Stadium%20right.wav

Please download them and give them a listen and let me know which one to your ear sounds better. And if you have any experience with fixing up audio – by all means – give it a shot. I’m good with video – but weak with audio.

These two samples are both around 38 MBs in size.

The “left” one is better sonically but it was recorded too far away from the stage. Too much echo & you can barely hear Ed’s guitar.

The “right” one although distorted, is a fuller sound. Even with some distortion, you can hear Ed play. I prefer the sound of this one.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

I would have to agree

My vote is left. Yes it sounds distant, but the right one sounds too distorted to me, especially in the vocals.
I don’t suppose you could use both at the same time?

Sure – that’s easy to do and that’s what I plan on doing.

guitard: Here’s a preview of the DVD (with left side audio):

https://www.dropbox.com/s/dvq3wmj2dg2yuzi/Van%20Halen%201988-06-26%20Giants%20Stadium%20sample.mpg

I think it plays better if you download it and watch it (at least, it was that way for me).

Nice footage, nice job! This is the best footage I have seen from any of the Monsters shows. I wish there was good audio & video from the arena tour that followed these shows in 88.
