Is it really necessary to zip files anymore?

It seems like a waste of time to me.

ZIP used to be all about compression. But today, many of the files we share are already compressed, so ZIPing them don’t add much that way. However, like RAR, ZIP does make a nice container for transferring many files under one filename.

I think it depends on how you’re “working”. For various reasons I’m using one-click hosters such as e.g. mega for my uploads. If I’m compressing a complete show in FLAC I usually get a 5% reduction in file size. With me uploading dozens of shows and with one-click hosters being quite limited in free space it does make a difference to me at the end of the day. Plus, as ron stated, RAR or ZIP are a nice container for transferring many different files as a single file only. And finally: I know we’re in the age of broadband and glass fiber but I for example live far away from big cities on the countryside. I’m using the fastest internet connection available at my place, still my download rate is only at 2.83 Mbps and my upload rate is a mere 0.42 Mbps. So any reduction in file size is greatly appreciated here.

That is pretty much what I thought…. one of the reasons I like Dropbox so much is that you can put all the files in a folder and share the folder. The same goes for torrents.

No need to go through the extra steps of zipping files.

So far… all have been blocked due to copyright infringement.

Will he still keep posting new tracks?

If they’re all blocked by Youtube, the simple solution would be DON’T USE YOUTUBE. There’s a million other ways to host audio content online these days. Vimeo provides alternate video hosting without copyright bots shutting you down; Soundcloud would probably make the most sense for hosting music.

I didn’t download it. Did the version of “It’s About Time” have the “Hey Mike, Hey Sam, I dunno why, but it’s about time” part still in it, or not?

Can anyone spare me a link to the “It’s About Time” track if anyone downloaded it before its untimely demise? Thanks, guys. -Mikey
