If there is a thread on this, I’m sorry. What is everyone’s opinion on using old ideas, and updating them a bit? I for one don’t give a crap. It’s still Van Halen music as far as I’m concerned. Sammy has been relentless is making sure everyone knows that Eddie and Dave did not create new music. If this is stuff that has been laying around for years, I say bring out more of it. Listening to this album just shows you how great Eddie and Dave are together and how much music we missed over the years. I hope the album sells beyond well, and let’s them know to release more music.

Twice I think.
Back in November: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/sammy-hagar-claims-new-van-halen-record-is-all-old-stuff-20111121
and in January: http://www.radiometal.com/en/article/chickenfoot-the-red-rocker%E2%80%99s-explosive-cocktail,56414
Were there others?

I don’t have any problem with it at all.
They all do it.
Stevie Nicks’ “planets of the universe” appeared in 2001, but it was a demo for Rumors (i think)
Gregg Allman flat out re-does ABB songs on each of his 1st 3 solo albums.
And I might goof this one a bit….but on DPs Perfect Strangers….I think the riff or melody of “Nobody’s Home” is almost identicle to one song on Burn or one of their mid to late 70′s cds (can’t remember what it matches with)

as long as they are updating it, I think it’s great.
Whitesnake does it too, I think (aren’t there 2 “crying in the rains” and 2 “Here I Go Again’s” ?)

I dont see why VH doing it now is any different then them doing it years ago. Voodoo queen turned into Mean Street, Hang em High used to be another song and so did a whole bunch others. How is that any different than what they are doing now?

I’m surprisingly ok with it with listening to the whole album. The licks they updated with new lyrics are killer to me. Bullethead is my only concern (for me)…but I quite like it now for some reason. There is obviously new material on this cd…and it is good. I am happy with what Ed and Al did…this is prime stuff. They are back for sure.

Sammy didn’t say anything people on here haven’t said…and I think when he listens he will like it; whether he admits it or not. The album is good…damn good.

If Ed had called me and asked me what to put on the album, I would have said “about half stuff from the Zero demos, reworked, and about half new stuff.”

So I think it’s perfect.

It is such a non-issue, just commenting that it’s not an issue gives it too much validation as an issue….

Amen to that! But here’s another connection that hasn’t been talked about much. Honeybabysweetiedoll = Flex from DLR’s No Holds BBQ 2002:

Sammy Had no problems using the Jump otro riff for top of the world or riffs from the wild life soundtrack for AFU or Right Now and I’m sure there some I forgot or don’t know about.Using old ideas is not new to Van Halen ,Eddie did it through out his carrer Roth or Sammy Era and its no secret.Sure some of these ideas are from the 70s but if they are good who cares. These were still written by Eddie Van Halen/DLR while other bands don’t even have good ideas old or new to pull from for theyre new albums or they use outside song writters.

I like Sammy Hagar but the fact is if you add up everything he has done since he was kicked out of Van Halen it does not hold a candle to this cd .Not to mention those horrible songs he did in 2004 that are the worst thing VH ever put there name on or Hagar for that matter.I did enjoy the tour though and the show I went too and some of the bootlegs I have seen.

i think it’s mainly because they are doing it so extensively that people are commenting. They’ve always done it, but not this much since Van Halen II.
