In episode #3 of Dave & Dave Unchained – a Van Halen podcast, the Dave’s welcome their first guest, vhtrading’s very own ffoner, better known as “Van Halen Rising” author Greg Renoff. They dissect Renoff’s unique approach to creating his book. Then they explore Renoff’s behind-the-scenes research, such as his journey finding VH engineer Don Landee, capturing the feel of the Pasadena scene, locating VH’s original keyboard player, and even what he left out of the book. But that’s merely an appetizer! Once they get deeper into the woods, the trio analyzes the tug-of-war relationship between David Lee Roth and Edward Van Halen, DLR’s current role in the band, Ed’s buck wild Billboard interview, whatever happen to the “secret project,” the state of VH’s legacy, a possible reach out to Michael Anthony, and more. They even open with an analysis of David Lee Roth’s recent comments on the future of the band. And listen for a shameless plug of vhtrading!

Had the opportunity to listened to all three (so far) podcasts on a recent trip.

The content is good, and I expect to be listening to future casts. However, I urge you guys to upgrade your audio equipment. #1 was almost unlistenable. #2 was better, and #3 better still, but still suffered from AGC problems.

Bottom line: good job guys!

HALEN HUNGRY? ROTH SERVES UP “EAT ’EM & SMILE”

Heard you missed us, well we’re back! “Dave & Dave Unchained” – the Van Halen podcast – returns with episode 4 celebrating the 30th anniversary of David Lee Roth’s 1986 solo album, “Eat ’Em & Smile.”

At a time when Van Halen didn’t sound very Van Halen, Roth opted to head in the big rock direction VH was known for mixed with a bit of his “Crazy from the Heat” style added in for good measure. Roth hired gunslingers Steve Vai on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass with Gregg Bissonette behind the drum kit. The videos were wild and colorful and the live show was packed with Van Halen hits.

The Dave’s discuss the launch of Roth’s band, the “Eat ’Em & Smile” tour and breakdown the album song-by-song. There’s also an exclusive interview with Vai, who looks back on his “Eat ’Em & Smile” days, why the band changed direction with the next album “Skyscraper,” and even opened up about the “Eat ’Em & Smile” reunion that almost happened and might still happen. To cap things off, the ‘cast concludes with part 2 of the interview with “Van Halen Rising” author Greg Renoff who talks about his massive “Eat ’Em & Smile” article he wrote for Guitar World, Roth’s botched movie, and the awkward position DLR is currently in these days.

Sit down with a bottle of anything and a glazed donut while enjoying this firecracker of an episode!

THE VH THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

What would have happened if Van Halen went with another singer instead of Gary Cherone? Perhaps the VH space-time continuum would have veered into an alternate universe. For episode 5, “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen Podcast” jumps in the DeLorean and travels back in time to the summer of 1996 when a Nashville rock vocalist named Mitch Malloy had a brief stint as the third singer in the mighty Van Halen.

In an exclusive interview with the Dave’s, Malloy recounts how he got introduced into the lead singer hunt, his days at 5150, getting offered the job, what made him hit the eject button, the night he almost sang with the band, and how his friendship with Eddie continued even beyond Gary’s tenure.

“This is so weird,” says Malloy in the interview about first reaction to playing with the band. “I’m listening to myself singing with Van Halen. That’s not Sammy and that’s not Dave, it’s me!”

The podcast also touches upon Van Halen’s current options moving forward as well as upcoming new VH book, “Runnin’ with the Devil: A Backstage Pass to the Wild Times, Loud Rock and the Down and Dirty Truth Behind the Rise of Van Halen,” on the horizon by former manager Noel Monk.

So strap on your bib and sharpen your utensils because this is one dense and intense six-course meal that will leave you with a Halen Hangover.

VAN HALEN’S VMA D-Day

Twenty years ago Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards after being apart for 12 years. But the reunion was short-lived as the band’s temporary bonding moment imploded after 5 minutes on stage and some uncomfortable exchanges in the Press Room. In episode 6, “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen Podcast” dissects this catastrophic moment in VH history and the fallout that followed.

As Doc Brown would say to Marty McFly, this is the incident that “disrupted the space-time continuum” in the world of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar’s out, Roth’s back in, Roth’s out (but was never really back in) and here’s comes…Gary Cherone? Surely, it was a confusing time for Halen fans.

EXTRA! EXTRA! – This month the Dave’s are going DOUBLE – offering listeners two episodes. This two-parter will be focused on Van Halen tribute bands. Part 1 showcases guitarist Derek Fuller who plays the Eddie Van Halen role in Fan Halen. Fuller talks about how he approaches playing EVH, his deep passion for the band that dates back to the late ‘70s, & playing with original Van Halen bassist Mark Stone in this extended episode. Look out for Part 2 dropping in a few weeks where the Dave’s deliver a whole brand new episode packed with Van Halen goodness. So sit down Waldo, crack a cold one and enjoy the madness!

A VH/KISS THEORY AND AN APOLOGY
It’s rare that an apology is delivered within the Van Halen universe. However, former VH frontman Sammy Hagar broke new ground when he recently appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s “Where Are They Now?” segment saying “I’m sorry” to the band for things he has said in the past.

In episode 6, part 2 of “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen podcast,” the new Hagar interview gets fully analyzed and motives are questioned. The Dave’s also continue their Van Halen tribute band series this time spotlighting singer Buddy Blanchard, who fulfills the David Lee Roth role in Romeo Delight, which is based in the Philadelphia area. Blanchard talks about how he closely studies and recreates the band’s musical and visual presentation plus he shares his thoughts on the VH catalog.

On top of all this, the podcast kicks off with a colorful discussion about one of the Dave’s recent backstage encounter with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons, which led to a conversation about Eddie and Alex Van Halen’s involvement in recording the 1977 KISS hit, “Christine Sixteen.”

Throughout the episode the Dave’s argue theories, rib each other, and debate issues that involve everything Van Halen.

VH 1981 vs. 1991 THROWDOWN
It’s Rocktober folks and in celebration of David Lee Roth’s (Oct. 10) and Sammy Hagar’s (Oct. 13) birthdays, 1981’s “Fair Warning” is pitted against 1991’s “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” in an album battle for episode 7 of “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen podcast.” Not only are the records compared and contrasted in a full detailed analysis, but surprising similarities are also drawn between these two historic releases.

When we last left Hagar, he was issuing an apology to Van Halen via the Oprah Winfrey Network. Now he’s back in the press tossing out jabs at Roth and the band while promoting his new gig as vocal coach on “The Voice.” Hmmm…suspicious. We thought the Red Rocker was waving the white flag. Silly Sammy, digs are for kids!

Additionally, the Dave’s hash out VH’s controversial position on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and an interview with singer Marq Torien of the Van Halen inspired-band, BulletBoys is thrown in for good measure.
