kite: another question, do they need to share royalties with Sam?

This is actually a good question/point. I just read an article down here about a club owner getting in trouble for having cover bands and not paying out royalties. The world is going to shit and this is just more proof of that. When you can’t play covers in a bar for $45 a night + beer – it’s over.

mikeyV: I was thinking that also the other day.I do like the Sammy stuff, always have and I truly like both versions, DLR and SH.I bought my first VH record in August of 78.I was in line to get the first Sammy/Van Halen LP also. We always like to talk about why won’t Dave do any Sammy songs, I think we’ve listed everything.Dave couldn’t hit the range (he could still make certain songs work), Sammy stuff was irrelevant (I don’t know wasn’t there a Grammy and some number one hits) So the next question why wont Eddie play Steve Vai/Roth era songs Are the songs irrelevant (Dave had a huge following on the first couple of LP’s especiallywhen MTV rotated the hell out of the videos due to fans demands) or is it, that Eddie can’t play the songs. Just my own opinion … I don’t think Dave wants to gives Sammy credibility and I don’t think Eddie wants to give Dave’s solo career credibility. I think Ed could play Vai but doesn’t want to, not because of Vai, but because of Dave. I also think Dave can’t hit some of Sammy’s notes but Dave can’t hit some of Dave’s notes from long ago. I think Dave could do a Sammy song in a fresh way but won’t because it will say something positive about the Sammy era. I think there is a lot of ego in there. Personally, I’d like to see Dave sing a Sammy song and Ed play a Vai song. I’m smart enough to know it will never happen.

I think it would be awesome if they did one from each, I would like to hear Dave sing “Black and Blue”‘ I think he could pull that off, and if the VH boys played “Yankee Rose”, it would be a very fun night.
But I won’t get my hopes up…
