Only 17 video clips were uploaded. I was able to nab a few more videos from another taper who’s video was just as good, so maybe a somewhat decent DVD can be made from them?

Does anyone know if he only filmed 2/3 of the show?

Why did he stop… battery die?

I think security shut him down. Quite a shame as that’s one stellar recording.

I didn’t see security hassle anyone at Red Rocks except for the front row people that tried to get too close to the band.

At Red Rocks, the stage is quite low (only 12-18 inches higher than the floor) and there isn’t much of a barricade. The front row people were told to stay behind a seam in the concrete, which left them about 6 feet from the “barricade”. Saw the security people go after several that breached the concrete seam during the show.

Dunno what things were like back further though.

During “soundcheck”, one person got thrown out for filming (or taking pics?), while another guy had his shots deleted for him.

Van Halen at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (photos, review)

July 21, 2015

If you came for the nostalgia, it was an alright night. If you came for the music, you were bumming.

The pioneering blues metal band Van Halen — anchored by the mighty Van Halen brothers Eddie and Alex — once bridged the gap between pop and metal. They defined a sound. Today, they remain as loud as ever, but their tired rock has reached its sell-by date.

Van Halen’s vapid exhaustion was on display Monday at Red Rocks, as relic rocker David Lee Roth croaked and revolutionary guitar wizard Eddie Van Halen regurgitated his supersonic shtick.

Even with a stellar setlist that included hits, deep cuts and some of the pioneering band’s most compelling riffs, the show fell spectacularly flat on Monday. If there was any star, it was Eddie’s 24-year-old son, Wolfgang, whose dynamic bass built a rich backdrop for his dad’s expressive guitar. Wolfgang’s sly chord changes in 2012′s “She’s the Woman” and “China Town” revealed an intimate connection to his dad’s guitar, gently nudging his 60-year-old pop into richer spaces.

But Roth’s struggle eclipsed all moments of glory. If the consummate showman is troubled by blown lyrics and missed notes, he very likely spiraled into a deep funk late Monday. But Diamond Dave, who rotated through a rainbow of sparkling outfits at Red Rocks, has always been more flash than substance. With his fresh Japanese tattoos peeking from beneath his sleeveless vest, the 60-year-old did his best Jazzercise kicks all night while gasping and chanting every third word.

“Running … pant … devil … pant … whaaah!” He rambled through unrelentingly mundane stories. In one of the strangest moments ever for Red Rocks, Roth strummed an acoustic slide and blasted into a harmonica as he relayed the boring details from a decades-ago night with Ozzy Osbourne.
(I have to take this chance to apologize to my mom, who sparked a mighty row with her tweener son sometime in the early 1980s when she bashed David Lee Roth as “a colossal twit” and refused to play any Van Halen cassettes in the family van. Sorry Madre.)

Like him or not, it seems implausible that Roth can make it another 30-plus shows to Van Halen’s end-of-tour homecoming at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl in October. While he never dropped his gape-mouth grin, Roth could not hide the fact that his voice is shattered after the tour’s first eight shows. Maybe it’s time to take a page from the Journey playbook and start trolling Manila nightclubs for a singer who can hit those sustained notes.

The band launched the nostalgia-heavy show with the powerful “Light Up the Sky,” from 1979′s Van Halen II. The song promised more than what was delivered as the four-top rolled through the band’s first six albums, sampling heavily from each in a buffet of early Van Halen.

Eddie, graying a bit and casual in jeans and sneakers, joined his son in rescuing the spluttering Roth many a time, offering strong harmonies on every song, including rock-solid vocal arcs inside “Beautiful Girls” and “Ain’t Talking About Love.”

Touring in support of their first-ever live album with Roth — “Toyko Dome Live in Concert” — the band stormed through 25 songs in about two-and-a-half hours. The crowd thinned considerably about halfway through the show.

Eddie and his older brother Alex on drums make an all-time team. Adding the younger Wolfgang has created an even more vibrant dynamic. The Van Halen family vibe was buoyed by Eddie’s apparent high spirits. He’s obviously stoked to be playing with his son and brother. Eddie roamed the stage on Monday, joining his brother on the sculpted steel drum platform and laughing with his old pal Roth. Those days of alcohol-fueled acrimony between Eddie and Roth seem distant.

Eddie’s technical prowess was on display during his enervating solo, which saw plenty of his trademark, two-handed tremolo picking and that expressive speed that defined his band in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. Still, the jams were nearly identical to those from Van Halen’s earliest albums. Roth tried to cajole Eddie into playing some Santana riffs heading out of “Dance the Night Away,” but the guitar giant demurred, apparently not eager to stray off the well-trodden setlist the band has followed for this tour.

If there were any fiery moments, they came late in the show with Eddie’s turbulent licks in Unchained” and their unique — yet straight off the album — take on the Kinks’ bluesy “You Really Got Me.” Roth played the drum major on the closer “Panama” twirling his mic stand like a baton and leaping maniacally in the encore “Jump.”

Dave doesn’t seem to be getting many positive reviews from the critics.

From the YouTube videos, he seems to be pushing his voice hard…. really struggling. It’s really too bad his voice has deteriorated so much.

I couldn’t give two shits what a critic thinks. The hardcore fans seem to be enjoying the shows. I’ll take their word over some ‘critic’ who doesn’t know shit about the band and only went to the show because his job required he go there and write something about it.

True. Plus here’s the same guys review of a Chickenfoot few years back….

There was the ham-fisted douchebaggery of Hagar, whose cringe-worthy lyrics could not eclipse his unbridled energy and unflappable dedication to the party. There was the clumsily elementary work of ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, who, despite decades in the deep end, can barely tread water. (There’s a reason why he was replaced after nearly 20 years with Van Halen by a teenager.)

Wouldn’t a hardcore fan tend to be biased?

What does the casual fan think? Most of the crowd must be filled with the casual fan.
