This is the opening weekend of The Tahoe Wabo cantina. I had gone to all three nights for the first three years. After that, it was becoming a lot like the birthday bash, too crowded, too crazy and too many jerks. Back at that time I did have some inside connections and recorded from the same spot for all 9 shows, there was an alcove along the main walkway that was elevated above the main floor dead center of the room.

This show came from my era of DAT recording. It was a great machine, however it had one fatal flaw. The recording level was controlled by a knob on the top of the deck that could not be locked. I had to be really careful, as one wrong move and the volume would change. Even after I taped over the knob it still wasn’t fool proof. That issue occurred on this recording for the encore. I had taken out the recorder to see how much was left on the tape, when I put it back the levels changed causing major distortion. Thankfully the backup Minidisc was running and was able to patch in the encore.
For what it’s worth I have seen Sammy perform 136 times combined, solo, VH, CF and Wabos. There’s more coming.
