The path to stardom is different for everyone. Tupac Shakur started out as a backup dancer, John Legend was Kanye West’s keyboard player back when he still fell into the ordinary people category. We The Best Music Group’s newest young starlet Steph Lecor got her big break from an unlikely group of music icons that were rocking stages before she was even born.

“My first real step into the industry was as a backup singer on the Van Halen tour,” Steph tells BET.com. “At that time I was really afraid of performing and I had a lot of anxiety about getting on a stage, so I went on a tour to force myself to get on a stage and to prepare for my future. That tour is what really started my career because it forced me to face my fears and get on stage in front of 20-30 thousand people every night. I honestly owe my career to that situation.”

After traveling the world with the classic rockers and a failed stint with an independent label in Connecticut, as a member of the pop group Kulture Shock, Steph began to find success as things dissolved with the group. She decided to roll the dice and persevere solo.

Raised in Miami, FL this spunky songstress began her music career singing in her church choir, and at local talent shows. After graduating high school, Stephie was able to take her musical aspirations to the next level. Her professional music career as a back up singer for the Van Halen tour, a gig booked for her by Ky-Mani Marley. She toured over 20 states on the Van Halen tour, and quickly rose from a back up singer to a center stage songstress.” I had an opportunity to have a solo part. It was very exciting to get in front of thousands of people and have a moment to step out from the back and shine,” reflects Steph.

The 27-year-old’s newfound fame has been a long time coming. Lecor has been singing professionally for the past decade. After a stint as a background singer for both Van Halen and Kimani Marley, she joined a pop/edm group, “Kulture Shock.” She later left the group, and a year ago, began working on her solo album.

I’m guessing she was a backup singer to the Marley band in 07/08? Maaaaaaybe she was offstage and helped pad the backing vocals as well? I dont think so, but I guess it’s possible.

If and that is a big IF she did tour with Marley in 2007 she was NEVER on stage in front of 20,000-30,000 people a night with Van Halen. Not to mention the “classic rockers” never traveled the world in 07/08

Not to mention they’re really stretching the ‘stardom’ thing.. she’ll be at Burger King spitting on your fries in no time.

She must have been singing with Marley when they opened for VH. That’s the only scenario that makes sense.

I came across another interview where she was mentioned as a singer for VH, so did a little more research, and sure enough, it was for Ky-Mani Marley, not Van Halen. Talk about not being truthful….

VIBE: You started off as a back-up singer but went a different route than most singers in your lane by singing for rock group Van Halen. How did you start doing that?
Steph Lecor: It was an opportunity to push myself to get on the stage but it was really cool. When I first auditioned, I got it but I turned it down because I was really nervous about being in front of all those people. Then the girl they picked didn’t work out so they called me in midway so I ended up going. I really owe that experience to where I’m at now.
