Here we have a totally unheard, uncirculated soundboard recording, capturing the Van Halen concert in St. Paul during their Diver Down tour (Hide Your Sheep tour) in 1982. Not even an audience recording of this show has circulated previously.

During the breakdown of Unchained, Dave plays out his rarer routine that is seemingly prompted when people are making a mess on the stage, in this case towards someone throwing beer. As his usual comeback goes, he delivers the “after the show I’m gonna f his girlfriend” line.

Probably not too significant of note, but Secrets starts a bit late with a weird build up, as if Eddie was having some sort of issue with his yellow Kramer doubleneck guitar.

The first cut in the recording is where Roy would often pause to save space, during the lengthy break where Dave would talk to the crowd before Jamie’s Cryin’. The first side of the 90 minute master tape ends partway into Dave’s story-time interlude during Everybody Wants Some. The second side of the master tape starts at the final few ending notes of the reprise of Everybody Wants Some, so the reprise is essentially missing. There are short tape pauses during the encore breaks, but no music missing except the Growth intro to You Really Got Me, hence the abrupt start. The second side of the tape ends barely a minute into You Really Got Me, so is missing Happy Trails and the reprise of You Really Got Me.

Hello all.

Thank you to all of those involved in the liberation of these great shows.

May I ask, has anyone grabbed this St. Paul show that would be willing to share it? I’m having trouble downloading it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Bill

ron: Direct download links found here: https://www.guitars101.com/threads/van-halen-1982-08-10-st-paul-civic-center-st-paul-mn-sbd-flac-24-bit.834224/

Thank you Ron.

I already tried the guitars101 links over the last couple of days. Unlike all of the other shows, I could not get those to work for some reason. For example, the File Factory link says, “This site can’t be reached”. I’m not sure why. It hasn’t been a problem until this show. Again, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you read down in the thread, there is a Mega link that’ll work.

As an experiment, I wanted to try to remix one of my favorite shows that they just released, which was St Paul, MN 8/10/82. I put the audio in an audio software and was able to split the tracks into bass/drums/vocals/guitars. And then mixed them in audacity to my liking. I wanted to make it sound like their albums (guitar in one speaker, bass in the other), but I think it ended up sounding like one of the ’77 live shows at the Whiskey. Which isn’t bad!

I think it came out so good, I’m going to try and do some more. It is pretty rough though, so I expect it to get better as I go along.
