Here we have a totally unheard, uncirculated open-mic recording, capturing the Van Halen concert in Fresno during their Diver Down tour (Hide Your Sheep tour) in 1982. This is what could be considered an “official audience recording”, having been recorded with an open-mic right next to the soundboard / mixing desk. It’s worth noting that an old audience recording of this show does also exist in circulation.

Unfortunately, only the second half of this recording survives. It seems that when the band were stopping in Worcester for the three-night stand in late October, Roy used the entire first side of this tape to record a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young radio special from “The Source” that was aired on WAAF.

With the first 45 minutes having been taped over, the second side of the 90 minute master tape starts partway into Dave’s storytime interlude during Everybody Wants Some. Then as he often did to save space, Roy temporarily paused the recording during Dave’s acoustic solo and Ice Cream Man, so essentially only captures 43 seconds of the acoustic bit, then 17 seconds of the ending of Ice Cream Man. Later, Roy did not start recording again after stopping the tape for the first encore break, so this also does not capture Bottoms Up, You Really Got Me or Happy Trails.

Luckily, the audience recording that circulates captures the entire show, and is roughly the same quality as Roy’s tape, so I highly recommend seeking that one out online if you want to hear more of this show.

It’s pretty clear that Roy was trying to save pennies, trying to figure out where to pause to make sure he’d be able to fit specific parts of each show on a single 90 minute tape, and yes many times recorded over shows later. As sad as it is that this show only survives with 41 minutes, there’s one coming later in the month that’s only 8 minutes surviving, and another that’s only 15 minutes that’ll be a up in few months time. Some remnants are so short that they’re unidentifiable and can’t even get their own upload, but I’ll probably put out some compilation of scraps as short bonus tracks with a soundcheck jam that’ll be coming out around the new year.

There are some shows where he’ll record more of the encore songs he didn’t always capture, and instead cut others like Pretty Woman. At the end of the 1982 tour he did record the last few shows on 120 minute tapes for a change, and in 1983 often used two 90 minute tapes. Despite that he still never got his tape flips down perfectly and would miss bits of things.

At the end of the day it’s a miracle this many shows survived at all. It’s hard to even know what his goal was with recording all of these, it’d hard to imagine he was listening back to every tape after every show, but perhaps he was?
