Here we have a totally unheard, uncirculated soundboard recording, capturing the Van Halen concert in Houston during their Diver Down tour (Hide Your Sheep tour) in 1982. This is the second of two consecutive nights Van Halen played at The Summit in 1982. Not even an audience recording of these Houston shows have circulated previously.

During Romeo Delight, Dave says “I still ain’t learned the f’in words!”, most likely in reference to the fact it’s the second night in Houston, but it’s way more amusing from our present perspective considering he “forgot the words” nearly every night of this tour.

During Dave’s storytime interlude of Everybody Wants Some, while the large majority of it wasn’t recorded, we do at least get to hear him bring out one of his rarer routines that is allegedly prompted when things get thrown on stage. This time he claims “some motherf’er just threw a lighter at me”, and ends with his usual delivery of “I’m gonna f your girlfriend pal”. Later during the pause of Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, Dave makes a remark about “all the f’in underwear on stage”.

The cuts on this tape are a bit unusual, considering the first 8 minutes of Side A had featured remnants from Oklahoma City, which were uploaded separately the other day. It seems the unusual cuts on Side B were done simply to try compensating for Side A having ran out of space sooner than it usually would’ve.

As usual, Roy paused the tape during the break where Dave would give an extended talk to the crowd prior to Jamie’s Cryin’. The first side of the 90 minute master tape runs out during Cathedral, however the tape is flipped quickly and starts again before the song ends. While Roy’s tapes are usually flipped sometime during/between Everybody Wants Some, he chose to still pause it here and miss the majority of Dave’s storytime interlude. Then as usual, Roy pauses the tape after Somebody Get Me A Doctor, so does not capture Dave’s acoustic solo, Ice Cream Man, nor Intruder. The recording starts again right at the start of Pretty Woman. The tape is paused again during both encore breaks. The last cut is very unusual, Roy pauses after the first part of You Really Got Me, so sadly misses the majority of Happy Trails.

Liberating unheard soundboard tapes, and other significantly rare master tapes, is absurdly expensive, and we release everything for free. If you appreciate what we do, any donations will help recoup the massively accumulating expenses of acquiring these tapes.
