guitard: I don’t know about the band being better musically with the new guys. Sure – those guys are technically more proficient than Ace and Peter – but they aren’t called on to perform at a higher level. They are there to strictly follow the script – which is to copy Ace and Peter’s styles as closely as they can.

I thought I heard Ace didn’t necessarily play on all the albums.

I think I read that also. If it’s true, whoever did play the guitar in the Ace-era recordings, mimicked Ace’s style and sound.

ace didn’t play on creatures of the night (although on the cover and in a video) vinnie vincent played guitar and also very little to do with the elder.. really his last guitar work with KI$$ was dynasty.. and even that only has a few tracks with ace….all others i believe are paul. but i am sure this is all common knowledge..

I have a hard time believing Paul was able to mimic Ace’s lead playing. I’m not saying Paul can’t play lead – just that he can’t effectively mimic Ace. I thought I read that a couple of different guys who filled in for Ace in the recording studio. I think one of them was Rick Derringer and another was Bob Kulick.

Bob Kulick is the one I was thinking of. I could swear I saw a VH1 Behind The Music (or some other show) where Ace was talking about drugs and drinking). I thought Ace said something about being drunk outside the studio and Bob Kulick walking by after the recordings session, Ace said something to Kulick like, “so how’d I do today?” Or something like that. I wish I could find that interview today.

Rick Derringer was brought in for Exciter off of Lick it Up Rick Derringer also did the Solo for Eat It off of Weird Al’s Bad. Little Van Halen side note
Creatures of the Night Album has credited at least 5 different guitar players.

Thanks, that is awesome! I heard that exact same strory only told by Ace but the story was exactly the same. My memory altered it a little I thought it was from earlier in the Kiss career rather than just the Alive II stuff. Whatever. Still great clip. Thanks, I loved that.
