guitard: So I check the touring history and I see they played Bay City twice in the summer of 1978, exactly one month apart (1978-07-19 and 1978-08-19).The first show was with Bob Seger and the second one was with Black Sabbath.

I don’t think the July date is correct. I think they played Bay City once that summer, in August with Bob Seger.

I’m quite certain of three things: it was a Black Sabbath / VH show, it was in 1978 (but not after school started that year), and it was in Michigan. So after doing a little more research, I’m going to say it was probably a show in Flint. It seems like every tour history list you look at is different, and doing a separate search only for Black Sabbath tour dates doesn’t seem to help much. But from what I can tell, VH possibly did four shows in Michigan in 1978:

1978-03-10 Masonic Auditorium, Detroit, MI (w/ Journey & Montrose)
1978-04-06 IMA Auditorium, Flint, MI (w/ Black Sabbath)
1978-08-19 Engel Stadium, Bay City, MI (w/ Bob Seger)
1978-09-14 Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI (w/ Black Sabbath)

The Flint show is typically listed as April 6th with Journey & Montrose, but this ticket stub says it was on the 4th:

This guy isn’t very good about answering emails … otherwise I’d ask him. It’s a mystery until then!

Ran across these comments searching for Black Sabbath tour dates. Probably common knowledge already.

http://birminghammusicarchive.com/memories-of-brum-gigs-77-79-where-you-there/

Black Sabbath Van Halen Odeon Mon June 5, 1978
Black Sabbath Van Halen Odeon Tues June 6, 1978

Black Sabbath Van Halen Odeon Mon June 12, 1978

If I remember correctly I went to the 6th of June gig because the 5th of June gig was cut short because some dry ice got into Tony Iommi’s amp & blew it up, they arranged to come back on the 12th in way of compensation & I got a ticket for that one as well,. Unfortunately Van Halen had gone back to the states by then & support for that night was The Fields of the Nephlim.

Not strictly true. The first gig was cancelled because they were held up after recording a TV show.. If it was an amp, it would have been replaced with the spare or one would have been supplied locally.

I worked at the Odeon from 1974 – 1988 as a technician and remember that event pretty well
Happy memories……… i can still see Eddie V.H. throwing himself at the amps… and the roadies trying to hold them up behind. This was only my 2nd ever Gig. As i remember Monday June 5th (Centre circle R30) was cut short near the end as Sabbath were playing Snowblind and pumping lots of dry ice around. The music suddenly stopped and the Manager had to try and calm the audience…(not very well!!!) Ozzy walked on and apologised saying to hold onto stubs as a new gig would be held. Support group was Brian James “Tanster Youth” (sic ?) All this for £2.20 ….Bargain!!

Wow, yes! I remember that gig.

Thank the lord I was actually in the room when Van Halen came on rather than in the bar. I had not heard them and the set was dynamite (even though they were given about 3ft of stage at the front and about 3 lights by the Sabs.) I, too was disappointed by then not being at the re-scheduled event. Probably a good job as Sabbath were not at their best at the time.

I went out the next day and bought the debut album at HMV.

Yep, seems like that April 4th date in Tulsa is correct. VH with Montrose. That ticket stub for Journey in Flint on the 4th is a mystery.

Date: April 4, 1978
Location: Tulsa, OK
Venue: Cain’s Ballroom
Headliner: Montrose
Opening Act: Van Halen
Tour: Van Halen

Van Halen’s debut Oklahoma performance was booked for a mere $500, just eight weeks after the release of their debut album on Warner Bros. Records.

Promoter Larry Schaefer: Van Halen tour manager (the late) Noel Monk’s influence at Warner Bros was the reason this show happened. He loved Cain’s. Van Halen was a new band, they were very nice kids and Eddie spent a lot of time in my office because I had a bunch of old Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars lying against the wall. And he commented that I had more guitars than him at that time. They were just becoming huge, every hour they were getting bigger. In fact I booked Van Halen to come back and open for Journey (on July 20) at the Tulsa Assembly Center. By that point, they had become so big that they didn’t want to open for them and pulled out of my show, which meant we went from a sell out to a half empty house!
